Holafly Unlimited Plans: Are They Worth It in 2026?

Holafly’s headline feature is simple: unlimited data. But “unlimited” means very different things from different providers, and whether the plan pays off depends on the shape of your trip. We spent three weeks testing Holafly across Japan and Spain to find out.

The short verdict

• Single-country stays of 7+ days with heavy usage: worth it, and hard to beat elsewhere
• 2–3 day city breaks: usually not — small capped plans cost less
• Multi-country hopping: check the coverage list first; Holafly’s regional selection is thinner

How Holafly’s pricing works

Holafly doesn’t sell data buckets — it sells time. You pick any duration from 5 to 90 days, and data is unlimited for that window. Its cost model is “day rate × days”, not “price per GB × usage”.

That structure favours two groups. Remote workers: hours of daily video calls, cloud sync and large file transfers burn 3–5 GB/day, forcing constant top-ups on any capped plan. Long-stay travellers: past a month, the cobbled-together total of capped packs quickly exceeds Holafly’s flat price.

The reverse holds for light users — at a few hundred MB a day you’re subsidizing heavy users, and Holafly is a bad deal.

Field test: three weeks in Japan and Spain

Speed. The Japan line rides major local carriers: 120–280 Mbps down on 5G in central Tokyo. Spain delivered 60–150 Mbps on mixed 4G/5G in Madrid and Barcelona. Comfortably enough for 4K streaming, video calls and hotspot sharing.

Fair use. We pushed past 200 GB cumulative in three weeks with zero throttling. The terms do reserve the right to manage extreme usage (hundreds of GB per cycle) — irrelevant for travel use, but not a home-broadband replacement for heavy downloading.

Hotspot. Tethering worked at full speed in both countries; a few destinations do cap hotspot speed or sharing, flagged on the purchase page — glance at it before checkout.

Install and activation. Buy on the web or app, scan the QR, and it activates automatically on first connection abroad — about 5 minutes end to end. Mid-trip extensions happen in-app without reinstalling.

The break-even math against capped plans

Rough math for a 10-day Japan trip at ~$2/GB local capped rates:

• Light user, 0.5 GB/day: 5 GB ≈ $10 of capped data — Holafly clearly pricier

Things to know before buying

• Hotspot: supported on most destination plans, but a few countries limit tethering speed.
• Fair use: speeds may be reduced after very high usage in some destinations, as noted in the plan details.
• Top-ups: you can extend a plan mid-trip directly from the app.
• Refunds: unactivated plans are refundable; once activated, terms apply — don’t scan in haste if you bought wrong.

Verdict

If you stream a lot, work remotely, or simply hate topping up, Holafly’s unlimited plans are a strong pick.
